Battery Keeps Dying

If you keep needing jump starts, the problem is usually one of three things.

Severity: Medium

What to Do Right Now

Have a parts store test the battery and alternator (free at most). If both pass, the issue is parasitic drain — inspect for lights staying on.

Common Causes

  1. Bad battery: Batteries lose capacity with age. If yours is 4+ years old, replace it. Shop car battery
  2. Failing alternator: Alternator should produce 13.8-14.4 volts at idle. Less means it's not charging the battery. Shop alternator
  3. Parasitic drain: Something is drawing power when the car is off (interior light, glove box light, aftermarket accessory). Shop fuses
  4. Loose or corroded battery cables: Poor connections prevent proper charging. Clean and tighten the terminals. Shop battery terminals
