Car Won't Start

Diagnosing a no-start depends on what happens when you turn the key.

Severity: High

What to Do Right Now

Note exactly what happens when you turn the key (silence, click, cranking, etc.) — that's the biggest diagnostic clue.

Common Causes

  1. Dead battery (clicking sound): Rapid clicking when you turn the key usually means the battery doesn't have enough power to crank the starter. Shop car battery
  2. Bad starter (single click, no crank): A single loud click and silence often points to a failed starter motor. Shop starter
  3. Bad alternator (battery dies repeatedly): If you keep needing jump starts, the alternator may not be charging the battery. Shop alternator
  4. Empty fuel tank or bad fuel pump (cranks but won't fire): If the engine cranks normally but won't catch, check the gas gauge first, then suspect the fuel pump. Shop fuel pump
  5. Bad ignition switch: If nothing happens at all when you turn the key — no dash lights, no click — suspect the ignition switch. Shop ignition switch
