Engine Overheating

Overheating can destroy your engine in minutes. Pull over immediately if the gauge enters the red zone.

Severity: Critical

What to Do Right Now

Pull over and shut the engine off. Do NOT open the radiator cap when hot. After the engine cools, check coolant level and look for leaks.

Common Causes

  1. Low coolant: Most common cause. Could be a leak, a bad cap, or simply not topped off. Shop coolant
  2. Stuck thermostat: A thermostat stuck closed prevents coolant from flowing to the radiator. Shop thermostat
  3. Failed radiator fan: If the fan doesn't kick on at idle, the engine overheats in traffic. Shop radiator fan
  4. Failed water pump: Water pump leaks coolant and stops circulating it. Shop water pump
  5. Clogged radiator: Old radiators can clog internally, restricting flow. Shop radiator
