Loud Exhaust or Rumbling Sound
A loud exhaust note that wasn't there before almost always means a leak or a failed component — and it's worth fixing fast because the fumes can enter the cabin.
Severity: Medium
What to Do Right Now
Get under the car (cold) with a flashlight and follow the pipe from the engine back. Soot streaks mark leaks. A rattling cat or muffler usually fails inspection.
Common Causes
- Rusted-through muffler: Mufflers usually rot from the inside out, especially in salt-belt states. A loud, deep drone is the classic sign. Shop muffler
- Cracked or broken exhaust manifold: Cold-start ticking that gets louder under acceleration is a textbook manifold crack — manifolds expand with heat and seal up. Shop exhaust manifold gasket
- Blown gasket between sections: Exhaust flanges use crush gaskets that fail with age. Look for soot streaks at the joints. Shop exhaust gasket
- Hollowed-out catalytic converter: A cat that's lost its substrate rattles when tapped and lets the engine breathe too freely — also throws P0420/P0430 codes. Shop catalytic converter
- Broken hanger letting the pipe rest on the floorboard: Cheapest fix on the list — rubber hangers crack and the whole pipe sags. Replace the hanger and the noise often goes away. Shop exhaust hanger
